New (and easy) mockup feature in Adobe Illustrator

A presentation asset created with the Adobe Illustrator Mockup feature

Simon demonstrates how to use Adobe Illustrator's new mockup feature to create portfolio assets quickly and easily. Here are the key points:

  1. Create a new document in Illustrator, using pixels and RGB color mode for web use.

  2. Import two elements:

    • A stock photo (or your own photo) of a hand holding a can

    • Your artwork (PNG or AI file)

  3. Position the hand image in the artboard, then place your artwork on top.

  4. Select both items and go to Object > Mockup (Beta).

  5. The artwork is automatically inserted into the 3D space of the image beneath.

  6. Use handles to adjust the size and position of your artwork on the can.

  7. The mockup feature intelligently wraps the artwork around the can and places it behind fingers for a realistic effect.

  8. Simon mentions a mockup panel with additional options but doesn't find it very useful.

  9. To enhance the realism, he suggests:

    • Using the Transparency panel to apply a multiply blend mode

    • Reducing the opacity slightly to help the artwork blend with the underlying image

  10. The entire process takes less than a minute to create a convincing mockup.

  11. To finish, export the asset for screens:

    • Name the file

    • Choose export settings (in this case, PNG)

    • Select the output folder

Simon emphasizes that this new Illustrator feature is a quick and easy way to create convincing mockups for portfolio websites.
